Khan was in drastic need of training when he came home. He had only been let off his lead once with his previous owners, when they had taken him to Mablethorpe beach. After trying to catch him for nearly three hours they decided not to do it again! He also tried to kill everything that wasn't another dog. He succeeded on a couple of occasions but we won't go there!

We started his training right away. He was very quick to learn things but even quicker to ask why? Everything had to be his choice and when he realised that if he made the correct choice he got loads of sweeties there was no stopping him. We went to an exemption show, the one that Letchworth DTC used to hold at the Shuttleworth Collection, in Biggleswade. To my total amazement we won first prize, in the 'starters' obedience, out of a class of 52 entries. So, we entered an open obedience show and everything was going well until the last exercise. We got ready to do a retrieve. I sent him after the dumb-bell, he ran straight........past it to investigate all the other rings in the vicinity. More training needed :)

We dabbled a bit in Agility too. He was great in training, where we were fenced in but, at the couple of shows we went to I was never truly convinced that he wouldn't have been happier catching a quick snack in the mini ring!

Unfortunately, Khan was not to make old bones. In February of his last year I noticed his top lip was swelled. I just put it down to the fact that he had been 'investigating' the hedgehogs in the training field. After a couple of days and it still hadn't gone down, we made a trip to the vets.

He was diagnosed with, if I remember correctly, mass cell malignant carcinoma. He was operated on and the tumor was removed. Within six weeks it had returned and the only option was to remove most of my handsome boy's top jaw. Perhaps I was selfish, but I couldn't do it to him. At the beginning of June he stopped eating and over the next few days went down hill rapidly. We went back to the vets and Khan died in my arms.

This is the last photo I took of him....
